Have you ever noticed smells that remind you of something? Maybe a certain perfume that reminds you of the person who wore it or a candle that reminds you of someone's home. Well, that happened to me at work Friday as I ate my lunch. I hadn't been to the grocery store in quite a while and our cubbard was looking kind of bare. Trying to figure out something for lunch was a challenge. I decided on string cheese and left over asparagus. I also fixed four vanilla wafers with peanut butter, something I hadn't had in years! This was a standard snack at my home when I was growing up and now today as I peeled the saran wrap away it smelled just like I remember it in first grade. I don't know why I remember this so vividly but every day at snack time I would have homemade vanilla wafers or Ritz crackers with peanut butter. There would always be four of them neatly wrapped in tin foil. I was the youngest one in first grade and the smell would always make me think of home and my mama. We did not have bookbags so I would always find the snack tucked inside the pocket of my notebook. I can't remember a single time she forgot to pack it. As I relived the smell on Friday it took me back home and made me think of the loving hands of my mom. The taste is still the same. There were other teachers eating with me but only I knew that I had experienced a little piece of 1st grade and home sweet home....51 years later!
I saw Spring today,
It came in the blink of an eye,
I thought it was buried forever,
But under the earth it just slept for awhile.
Its first arrival was the soft, yellow buttercup,
and the tiny sprout of the yellowbell bush,
God's wonderful greenery popped its head out,
and through the earth it started to push.
It gradually moved the cold soil away,
and pushed the dead leaves aside,
It wanted to let the the whole world know,
that SPRING is soon to arrive!

The first weekend in February our Sunday School Class had our quarterly social. For this social we decided to meet at the church and watch Fireproof on the big screen in our sanctuary. We also had popcorn and desserts to go along with it. Good idea and super cheap! Several of the girls at work had already seen the movie and talked about how good it was for a marriage. Since we already have what I consider a good marriage I didn't think much about it. Lewis is a really good husband but like most men he is a "typical male." He's never been much on frilly gifts or compliments. Half way through the movie I found myself crying but thought Lewis was probably thinking it was a sappy girl's movie. It was a week later on the Friday before Valentine that I realized he actually listened to the movie and learned from it. We had a Valentine social for our first graders and everyone had to dress up. Half way through the event I was called to the office to pick up something. That "something" turned out to be a dozen beautiful red roses with a balloon! I was totally shocked! Every year I would tell him not to spend money on flowers, but at the same time I would watch with jealousy as the others girls on my hallway received theirs. This year I had made no comment and knew it would be our usual Valentine card to each other and a chocolate bar with almonds! When I called to thank him for the roses he said after 40 years he thought I had waited long enough! All I can say is if you haven't seen Fireproof go rent it today! I'm pretty sure good things will be waiting for you, too!
